SPCA Auckland dog adoptions temporarily closed
SPCA Auckland dog adoptions are temporarily closed to the public after a minor outbreak of ringworm.
Ringworm is a contagious but very treatable fungal infection. It can be transmitted between animals, and also between
animals and people.
SPCA Auckland staff have isolated and will continue to treat the few dogs affected, but as a precautionary measure we
are closing the dog adoption area for the next 14 days. Members of the public will not be able to visit the dogs at the
Mangere-based shelter during this time. It will continue to be open for adoptions of cats, small animals and farm
animals.
There is also a restriction on the entry of incoming dogs, so members of the public are asked to please contact 09 256
7300 before bringing any dogs to SPCA Auckland.
“Given the number of animals we care for at the Animal Village, ringworm can spread quickly and we are fortunate to have
it contained to a small number of dogs. However we need to ensure the infection is contained, so our entire dog adoption
area is under quarantine. The health of our animals and staff is always our top priority. We apologise for any
inconvenience this causes and appreciate the public’s understanding,” says CEO Andrea Midgen.
Ringworm is identifiable on an animal by hair loss or a circle-shaped lesion, usually on the front legs, feet or head.
Anyone with concerns about their dog should contact their local vet for advice.
