Group pleased with improved performance

Bay of Plenty’s Civil Defence Emergency Management Group is delighted with its results from a recent capability assessment, showing impressive improvements in all areas of its work.

Overall, the group achieved a score of 67.8 percent, exceeding a Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management-set target of 62 percent for the assessment, which looks at all areas of group structure, planning, response and recovery work.

Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby, Chair of the Bay of Plenty Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Joint Committee, says the results are a reflection of the hard work put in by staff following the previous assessment in 2012.

“Since 2012, the Group has made huge gains in improving its leadership, culture and structures and we’re thrilled that this has been recognised,” Mr Crosby says. “In other areas, such as improving community awareness, we’ve also made significant improvement in, which has been great to see.”

“Our lowest score is in the recovery area, and we’ve newly appointed a full-time Recovery Manager to the Group which is our first step towards improving that score.”

Mr Crosby says he’s also pleased with comments made in the report which highlighted the level of understanding of those in the group about the role of civil defence in the region and that commended the way the group worked.

“I expect that the changes made recently to bring the Group’s operational staff under ‘one roof’ will only help build on this.”

The Capability Assessment Report is part of an audit carried out on all 16 CDEM groups by the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management.
