TCDC brings Inter-Council Sports Tournament to Thames
Our Council has won the hosting rights for the next Inter-Council Sports Tournament in 2016, which will see up to 500
people coming to the Coromandel to compete.
In March this year we sent the 'Coromandel Mussels' to the annual Inter-Council Sports Tournament in Northland. This was
a group of 25 (including support people) of our staff from different departments within Council who competed against
other Councils in football and touch rugby and a novelty event over a weekend.
Although they didn't come home with the trophy, the popularity of the Coromandel has seen our Council win hosting rights
for the 18th annual tournament.
For the past 17 years District, Regional and City Councils as well as Council-Controlled-Organisations (CCOs) from
around the country have participated in this sports tournament, which helps strengthen relationships between Councils as
well as stimulating healthy competition.
Thames was selected as the tournament venue and the benefits to the town and surrounding district with up to 500 people
expected will be felt, particularly for accommodation providers.
"Event tourism brings people to the town, we feed them, provide accommodation and perhaps they will stay an extra day to
explore our district," says Chief Executive David Hammond.
"Thames ticked the most boxes for this and it also happened that the only suitable venue available for the Saturday
night function catering for up to 500 people is in Thames. Weddings are popular at that time of year and sometimes
venues are booked years in advance," he says.
The tournament is being held on 12 March 2016 and invitations for participating in the event have been sent to Councils
this week.
