Guest MC and more revealed for Ray White Wanganui Sports Awards

The Friday, 9 October cut-off date for Ray White Wanganui Sports Awards nominations is almost upon us – and Sport Whanganui is urging sporting communities across the Whanganui, Rangitikei and Ruapehu districts to get their nominations in now before it’s too late.

Nominations are being sought across 12 categories and, on Monday, 28 September, Sport Whanganui is hosting the last of its two nomination evenings – aimed at assisting people to complete and submit their nomination forms. The evening will take place from 4–7pm at the Sport Whanganui office, 40 Maria Place Extension.

The popular awards ceremony, organised each year by Sport Whanganui to celebrate and recognise the success of the region’s sporting community, is being held at Eulogy Lounge, Wanganui Racecourse on Friday, 20 November. Tickets go on sale for the prestigious event from Monday, 12 October.

As well as a buffet dinner, live music and dance, this year’s awards night will feature an inspiring talk by guest MC Mark Inglis, a leading international motivational speaker and the only person living with a double amputation to have climbed Mount Everest.

Sport Whanganui’s CEO Danny Jonas says it’s Mark’s outstanding achievement that makes him the ideal person to come along and host the event.

“As well as providing the opportunity for our communities to come together to acknowledge and celebrate our region’s sporting achievement, the Sports Awards are also about inspiring future achievement.

“Mark’s amazing story demonstrates that, if we’re passionate enough, and willing to work hard enough, no matter what the obstacles, we can overcome them and achieve our goals and dreams.
“We’re urging our sport communities not to miss out on the opportunity to nominate someone they know whose sporting achievements deserve recognition, and to come along on the night and join us in supporting and celebrating these achievements.”

Anyone wishing to submit a nomination or find out more can visit http://www.sportwhanganui.co.nz/events-new. Nominations can be made online or by picking up a nomination form at the Sport Whanganui office at 40 Maria Place Extension. Nominations will close at 5pm, Friday 9 October.

Tickets will be available for purchase from Monday, 12 October at the Sport Whanganui office. Tickets are $60.00 each, or $30.00 each for nominees. Tickets for a table of 10 people can be purchased for $550.00.

The awards night will also feature the annual induction of members to the ‘Wanganui Sports Hall of Fame’ (where the region’s past outstanding sports achievers are acknowledged), and the ‘Sport Whanganui Roll of Honour’, which recognises volunteers who have contributed 25-plus years of service to the region’s sports.

Last year’s event attracted around 100 nominations. This is the 52nd year the Wanganui Sports Awards has been held. Organiser Sport Whanganui is a charitable trust working to develop, build and promote sport in the Whanganui, Rangitikei and Ruapehu districts.
