Rotorua death - man named

Police are now able to confirm the identity of a man who died at the Rotorua Police custody hub on Saturday (19 September) as 52-year-old William David Bircumshaw from Rotorua.

Police were called to assist Ambulance after Mr Bircumshaw was found in the City Focus area of Rotorua; believed to be intoxicated.

He was transported to the police custody hub where staff became concerned for his welfare, had him assessed by a doctor and called for an ambulance.

His condition deteriorated and police staff commenced CPR.

Following a post mortem yesterday the death is not being treated as suspicious and the matter has been referred to the Coroner.

Police are continuing to investigate his death on behalf of the Coroner and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified; which is standard procedure.

There will be no further police comment.
