Petone Wharf closed to vehicles

HUTT CITY COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE

16 September 2015

Petone Wharf closed to vehicles

The Petone Wharf is closed to vehicles for up to one year, after a slump in the deck of the wharf was discovered.

A small portion of the wharf is also closed to pedestrians during this time.

The slump was investigated by divers who confirmed a pile has rotted away just under the low tide mark.

Reserves Asset Manager, Craig Cottrill says, “The section that has slumped will be propped up temporarily and repaired as part of programmed maintenance in the next financial year.

“At this stage it’s not considered cost effective to repair one pile, when a survey of all wharves is due to take place over the summer period.”

Wellington company Calibre Consulting will conduct the all wharf survey, and local divers will do the underwater work.

“Our wharves are old; they’re all living past their design age and this type of damage is to be expected in some pretty harsh environments.”

Signage is in place at the Wharf and further updates will be available on the Council website.
