Community consultation on Sport & Recreation Strategy

News Release

Wednesday 16 September 2015

Community consultation to begin on Sport & Recreation Strategy

Community consultation is about to get underway on Rotorua Lakes Council’s draft Sport & Recreation Strategy.

The new draft strategy was endorsed at the council’s Strategy, Policy and Finance Committee meeting today (16 September).

The strategy was developed with the Sport & Recreation steering group, led by Councillor Charles Sturt, made up of representatives of key community interest groups, and proposes a vision that ‘Rotorua has active people, connected communities and outstanding places to play’.

The vision links to four Rotorua 2030 goals, and four objectives have been developed to achieve the vision. The objectives are to increase participation in sport and recreation; improve communication and collaboration between communities and sort and recreation stakeholders; provide sustainable access to high quality facilities and environments for sport and recreation that best matches community expectations; and prioritise the enhancement and development of Rotorua’s unique sport and recreation offerings.

Sport & Recreation Portfolio lead, Councillor Charles Sturt, said having portfolio groups had brought the focus of sport and recreation where it should be.

“It’s not in isolation because of the flow-on effects, such as the economic benefits and the wellness side of sport and recreation. We haven't just talked to people who play rugby, netball and rugby league - we've talked to people who do parkay, waka ama, bowls - so we haven’t restricted our contact stakeholder groups to just one particular part. We've gone right across the whole spectrum.”
The draft Rotorua Sport & Recreation Strategy and survey will be available on the council websiterotorualakescouncil.nz from 18 September to 31 October 2015.
The Sport & Recreation steering group will meet in November to review community feedback and consider what changes need to be made as a result.
