Amalgamation “off the table”, say Rotorua residents
Rotorua residents want to elect their own mayor and councillors saying Rotorua is distinctive, unique and different from
other districts and communities in the Bay of Plenty and needs local voices to represent them.
In a survey completed in July by APR Consultants for Rotorua Lakes Council, 91 per cent of residents said they wanted to
elect their own mayor and council because when based in Rotorua, they looked after residents’ needs and were accessible.
The amalgamation survey results and a water service delivery option are both on the agenda for the council’s Strategy,
Policy and Finance Committee meeting this week (Wednesday 16 September, 9.30am).
Committee members will consider recommending that council adopts a policy position on local government reform which says
Rotorua has a unique identify and sufficient scale to justify having its own mayor and council.
They will also consider recommending to council that staff work with interested councils in the Waikato region to
explore the formation of a council controlled organisation for delivery of waste and waste water services for multiple
councils.
