Giving love to Masons Lane

Masons Lane, a grimy but well-used pedestrian link between The Terrace and Lambton Quay, will be closed from this Monday 14 September so it can undergo a major transformation in the coming weeks.

The upgrade will create a modern industrial look and feel to the lane. The canopy at the Lambton Quay entrance will be removed to open up the space, the concreate walls will be deep-cleaned and a living green wall and feature lighting will be installed.

Councillor Nicola Young, Wellington City Council’s Central City Projects Portfolio Leader, is particularly delighted about Masons Lane.

“I campaigned to improve our laneways, and Masons Lane was top of my list. It was a real disgrace, and many people thought it threatening; yet it’s one of the main pedestrian links between the office blocks on The Terrace and Lambton Quay’s shops.

“It’s been great working with the adjacent property owners, and I’d like to thank them for their co-operation. Masons Lane will be welcoming and safe, so people will use it again and that will boost Wellington’s economic growth."

Deputy Mayor Justin Lester says the work in our laneways will help to reinvigorate their use and bring these unique spaces in our city to light.

“Laneways should be a key feature of the city, we want people to love using them and feel safe while they’re there.”

The project is planned to happen between September and November. The lane will be closed at times while work is underway - detours will be via nearby Farmers Lane or along Bowen Street.
