Successful international convention bid comes to fruition

Successful international convention bid comes to fruition next week

A successful conference bid made by Destination Rotorua’s convention bureau four years ago comes to fruition next week.

Around 700 occupational therapists and health professionals from around the world have begun arriving in Rotorua for a leading international health conference where diverse international research, skills and techniques are to be shared.

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick will open the 6th Asia Pacific Occupational Therapy Congress (APOTC) at the Energy Events Centre on Monday (14 September). The congress concludes on Friday (18 September).

It is the first time APOTC has been hosted by a Pacific nation - with previous congresses being held in Malaysia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand – and it follows Rotorua’s successful bid back in 2011.

Destination Rotorua general manager, Oscar Nathan, said hosting APOTC was a huge achievement for Rotorua and the whole district.

“International conference delegates are shown to spend up to three times more than the average international visitor. So hosting 700 international delegates to this congress will have significant positive impacts on the Rotorua economy,” said Mr Nathan.

“Being the first time that APOTC has chosen to be hosted by a Pacific nation is a huge achievement in itself. With Rotorua winning this event way back in 2011, it’s great to see the long-term project finally coming to fruition.”

The 6th Asia Pacific Occupational Therapy Congress includes a four-day scientific programme, one-day post congress workshops, a concurrent trade exhibition and cultural activities.
