Pair sentenced for accepting a bribe
Meng Yam (Peter) Lim and Kooi Leng Pan have been sentenced in the Auckland District Court today following a Serious Fraud Office (SFO) prosecution.
Mr Lim was sentenced to eight months on home detention and Ms Pan was sentenced to six months on home detention.
The former immigration official and his associate pleaded guilty in July this year to corruption and bribery charges.
An internal investigation at Immigration New Zealand was referred to the SFO in August 2013.
Mr Lim worked as a Border Control Officer and between February and April 2013, colluded with Ms Pan to corruptly accept $26,500 from two individuals for the provision of immigration assistance.
SFO Director, Julie Read said, “Corruption is not a way of life in New Zealand. We have a deserved reputation as one of the least corrupt countries in the world and as the lead investigative agency in relation to corruption, the SFO is committed to investigating and prosecuting offending in New Zealand in order to uphold that reputation.”
