Is a basic income the best medicine?
A basic income should be sufficient to enable everyone to fully participate in their community, says life member of BIEN (Basic Income Earth Network) Lowell Manning.
Manning will speak at Hastings War Memorial Library, Monday, September 21 at 7pm, hosted by The Friends of the Hastings District Libraries.
“Community well-being has been compromised by poverty, inequality, crime and violence,” Manning says.
Friends of the Libraries chairman Richard Peach, says Manning asks us to consider if a universal basic income is the medicine we need to recreate the inclusiveness and cohesion lost from our social fabric over recent decades.
Manning was policy director for the NZ Democratic Party for 15 years and developed a theory of debt modelling by revising the well-known Fisher Equation of Exchange (1911) to take account of interest-bearing debt and the unproductive investment sector.
This is a Friends of the Libraries speaker event. The friends hold these events as fundraisers and use the proceeds to purchase items for the libraries. Previous purchases resulting from the fundraising include couches, mats and furniture for the children’s and young adults’ areas, and community display boards. Tickets: $10 available from Hastings, Flaxmere and Havelock North Libraries.
