Mayor to address smokefree seminar
Mayor Lianne Dalziel will open a seminar to discuss achieving the Government's goal of a smokefree New Zealand by 2025.
The seminar, Partnerships as Pathways to Smokefree 2025, to be held on 21 September 2015, is an initiative of the Cancer Society on behalf of Smokefree Canterbury in collaboration with the Council and Canterbury District Health Board.
Mayor Lianne Dalziel will give the opening address: "Smokefree 2025 - a key foundation for rebuilding a healthier Christchurch".
The keynote speaker is Melbourne City Councillor Richard Foster who will talk about smokefree progress in Melbourne and how it has been well received by the public and businesses.
The seminar brings together representatives of various organisations including the Council, Canterbury District Health Board, the Cancer Society, University of Otago, Columbus Coffee, Timaru District Council youth ambassadors, and West Coast Primary Health Organisation.
Other topics include results of a Cancer Society survey about smokefree outdoor dining, smokefree retailing on the West Coast of New Zealand, and international trends.
Strategic Policy Unit Acting Unit Manager Claire Bryant says the Council in June indicated its intention to work proactively with others towards the Smokefree Aotearoa New Zealand 2025 goals.
"At the same time the Council decided to expand its Smokefree Public Places Policy, originally focussed on parks and events, to include bus passenger shelters and the entrances and exits to Council-owned buildings such as the Civic Offices, service centres, local board offices, libraries, community facilities, community halls, museums, leisure centres, recreational centres and arts centres from January 2016," Ms Bryant says.
"The seminar is an opportunity to discuss the Smokefree 2025 goal and ways we can work towards it. It aims to encourage more councils to extend their own smokefree policies to cover more public open spaces," she says.
The seminar on 21 September is by invitation only, but the Council will broadcast some sessions live on its Twitter feed on the day.
