Drivers encouraged to make a good call
Horizons Regional Council’s road safety team is conducting a joint campaign with Police to promote correct signaling at
roundabouts.
The campaign aims to educate drivers who are indicating incorrectly and reward drivers indicating correctly.
Horizons’ road safety coordinator for Palmerston North Desley Monks says there are still too many people who don’t
understand how to indicate around a roundabout since the law change in 2005.
“The message is important for people to take on, as incorrect signaling can cause a crash which could injure the driver,
the passengers or other road users.”
Mrs Monks acknowledges that not all roundabouts are equal but motorists should get into the habit of indicating
correctly to ensure they are driving safely.
“During this campaign, we’ll be monitoring roundabouts in the Palmerston North area and noting the registration numbers
of vehicles indicating correctly or incorrectly.
Registration numbers will then be sent through to a Police administrator, who sends out either a good call letter, or a
bad call letter.
The good call letter congratulates motorists for doing the right thing, and the bad call letter outlines what to do
correctly with a postcard that demonstrates this,” Mrs Monks says.
The most recent monitoring period found five vehicles indicating correctly and 17 incorrectly. Failure to enter, drive
around, or leave a roundabout incorrectly, could result in a fine of $150.
