Help keep Horowhenua beautiful during Clean-Up Week
Volunteers are needed to 'adopt a spot' in Horowhenua and pick up litter during Clean-Up Week startingMonday 14 September.
People can join a registered local clean-up event or even create one of their own, via Keep New Zealand Beautiful's website www.knzb.org.nz
Keep Levin Beautiful committee member Janet Brown says any individual or group is welcome to adopt a spot and that area can be a park or reserve, a street or even just a property frontage. Rubbish bags and gloves will be provided.
On Saturday 19 September Keep Levin Beautiful members will be at the Levin Adventure Park car-park from9.00am to 3.00pm to collect the filled KNZB-branded bags - black for rubbish and clear for recyclables. Green waste will not be accepted.
During Clean-Up Week last year in Horowhenua, 470 registered volunteers filled 300 bags with 2.5 tonnes of rubbish and 300kg of recyclables.
Mrs Brown says the clean-up events bring further benefits than just removing rubbish. She says it allows people to demonstrate their pride in where they live and also builds and strengthens community spirit.
"We'd love people to support us and show their pride for their appearance and beauty of our towns Levin, Foxton and Shannon. We want to enhance them for the pleasure and benefit of local people, as well as to impress visitors. Having litter lying about is nothing to be proud of."
Mrs Brown says the more volunteers who register and join in the clean-up events, the more effective the clean-up will be.
"We'd also love to see all retail shops and businesses, especially on our main road gateways to the north and south, make a conscious effort to remove any litter from their frontages and display a clean and tidy appearance."
Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week is one of the largest nationwide community events. Last year there were 562 clean-up events nationwide - up 54% from 2013 - with nearly 80,000 volunteers filling 15,312 rubbish bags and 8850 recycling bags.
