Iwi condemns illegal fishing in it’s territory
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated acknowledges the work done by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) in uncovering apparently illegal pāua and crayfish operations. These species are iconic to Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated and nothing is more important to our whānau, hapū and iwi than ensuring their sustainability. We support the work MPI is doing to police the Fisheries Legislation.
Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated does not condone breaches of the law in any sector and will act to ensure anyone involved in such breaches once identified is held to account. We are deeply disappointed in the actions taken by the individuals involved. It is important to Ngāti Kahungunu iwi that the integrity and the intent of the Kaimoana Customary Fishing regulations is maintained. Our Tangata Kaitiaki take their responsibilities very seriously and will also be very concerned about these allegations. We will engage with whānau and our commercial partners over the coming days and weeks to ensure robust support and safeguards are in place.
