Christchurch First to Experience the Newest Luminarium – Arboria

Cantabrians will be the first in New Zealand to experience the newest and most impressive luminarium, ARBORIA this week as part of Christchurch Arts Festival.

Christchurch Arts Festival is delighted to announce that the inflatable Luminarium, ARBORIA will replace EXXOPOLIS in Cathedral Square from Friday 4 to Sunday 13 September.

Sponsored by McConnell Dowell, ARBORIA and its four towering domes will radically transform Cathedral Square, and Cantabrians of all ages are invited to kick off their shoes, and discover a wonderland of tree-inspired turrets and kaleidoscopic tunnels.

Christchurch Arts Festival director Craig Cooper said the festival was delighted to have the opportunity to premiere ARBORIA in New Zealand. “This is the newest and most impressive offering from the world famous Architects of Air and Christchurch gets to have it first.”

Built in 2015, ARBORIA comes to New Zealand for the first time after touring Switzerland, Germany and the UK. Following Christchurch, ARBORIA travels to Auckland and Tauranga.

Luminaria are giant inflatable sculptures lit entirely by natural light. Designed by Alan Parkinson, ARBORIA is dedicated to the theme of trees and the installation offers a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes – between eight and ten metres tall - that rise to a brightly luminous tree trunk and branches that reach overhead.

ARBORIA also features an amazing sound experience which originated in the Ecuadorian Cloud Forest where musician and soundscape ecologist, Alice Eldridge, made recordings for biodiversity monitoring. To the forest and wildlife sounds Alice has added her own piano composition.

ARBORIA is at Cathedral Square, Christchurch from 4-13 September. Tickets are $5* per person and pre-bookings are available through Ticketek www.ticketek.co.nz 0800 842 538 or at the venue. Tickets already purchased by the public for EXXOPOLIS are valid for ARBORIA. *Service fees apply to tickets purchased online
