Rotorua locals invited to join Green Corridor launch celebrations

Rotorua Lakes Council is gearing up to launch the city’s new Green Corridor and is inviting local residents and community groups to join an evening of celebration and fun.

The launch, on Thursday 8 October, will feature a parade with entertainment and balloons at points along the Green Corridor route, finishing up at the Night Market with more live entertainment and an array of food and shopping on offer.

The council’s inner City Revitalisation Portfolio lead, Councillor Karen Hunt, said Mayor Steve Chadwick would be taking part and Rotorua’s ‘Frocks On Bikes’ cycling group had also signalled they would be out in force.

“So right now we’re really keen to hear from other community groups who could gather their members and families and friends together, and bring them along to walk, run, cycle or skate the new Green Corridor.

“It will be during the school holidays and we’ll be into daylight saving by then, so it’s a perfect opportunity for a fun-filled family evening.

“We’d love to see people dressed up for the occasion on bikes, youngsters on trikes or scooters, skateboarders, walking or jogging groups, and let’s not forget the less-abled as well. For example, it would be great to see a convoy of people on mobility scooters joining in the fun and enjoying a special trip along the new Green Corridor.”

Ms Hunt said work was progressing well on the last inner city sectors of the Green Corridor which would connect with the section already in place through Kuirau Park. She said weather permitting, the entire two kilometre Green Corridor should be finished, or close to completion, by the 8 October launch.

Any community groups interested in participating could register their interest with the council by email to info@rotorualc.nz or by calling the council Customer Centre on 07 348 4199 and leaving their name, organisation and contact number.

Families and individuals do not need to register and but could assemble at the Te Rununga Tea Rooms at 4.30pm on Thursday 8 October, ready to join the Green Corridor launch parade starting at 5pm.
