Short High Speed Pursuit Hawera
A 28 year old Hawera woman will be appearing in the Hawera District Court on the 1st September 2015 facing a number of
charges after failing to stop for police at an alcohol checkpoint.
On the evening of Friday, August 28 she led police on a short, but high speed chase which police managed to curtail
using two police vehicles forcing the driver to stop.
Police were shocked to find four children were passengers in the car, they were aged 4 to 14 years old.
No one was injured and no damage occurred to the two police vehicles.
The driver underwent an evidential breath test and police were alarmed to discover she blew over 1000 micrograms of
alcohol per litre of breath on an evidential breath testing machine. The new legal limit is 250.
The woman has been charged with excess breath alcohol, dangerous driving, failing to stop for police and Ill treatment
of the 4 children.
Sergeant Pat Duffy of the Taranaki Traffic Alcohol Group was dismayed that anyone responsible for children would drive
them when intoxicated and to try and evade police at speed is completely irresponsible.
He said the charges reflect the seriousness of the drivers offending.
