27 August 2015
Nelson has been awarded two One Day International Cricket matches for the 2015/16 season. The BLACKCAPS will take on Sri Lanka at Saxton Oval in the 3rd ANZ ODI on Thursday 31 December, and then again for the 4th ANZ ODI on Saturday 2 January.
Mayor Rachel Reese was delighted at today’s announcement. “Nelson will once again have the opportunity to host cricket at Saxton Oval as we consolidate our place on the international circuit.
“Our successful hosting of the Cricket World Cup showed to visitors and locals that our facilities are world class. These matches will allow us once again to showcase our city and venue to the world.
“I must congratulate Nelson Cricket, who have worked extremely hard to secure these matches at Saxton Oval. These cricket events provide a significant economic benefit to the region, as well as an opportunity for cricket fans to see their heroes up close.”
Richard Hayward, General Manager of the Nelson Cricket Association was also pleased to hear the announcement. “We are absolutely delighted with the news that New Zealand Cricket has allocated two back to back ODIs at Saxton Oval between the Blackcaps and Sri Lanka over the New Year holiday period.
“There is a lot of competition around the country to host international matches so this confirms that New Zealand Cricket recognises Saxton Oval as an international venue and also that the success of the Cricket World Cup proves that Nelson is hungry for international sport in the region.
“The ODI between these two teams last season was an exciting runfest with nearly 600 runs scored and the pitch has a reputation as being one of the best in the country.
“The Blackcaps are one of the most exciting teams in the world and it will be fantastic to have them play twice in Nelson over the New Year period when the region will be buzzing with holidaymakers.”
Hayward also indicated that The BLACKCAPS won’t be the only first class team playing at Saxton Oval this summer. “Nelson has also been allocated two T20 matches between the White Ferns and Sri Lanka on November 20 and 22. With Central Districts playing three matches in Nelson, next season will be the busiest Saxton Oval has ever been for hosting top class cricket.”
