Cathedral Theft on Camera

Cathedral Theft on Camera

There is frustration and disappointment that the open doors of Auckland’s Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell are being treated as an opportunity for theft.

Recent footage from the Cathedral’s security system shows a man enter the Cathedral and wrench open a secure donation box to remove the money after a service. The same day computer hardware, and chalices, that are used for communion, were also taken. The man shown in the footage has been seen at the Cathedral on several occasions.

It is hoped the man may be identified through the security footage. Anyone who knows the man’s identity can contact Auckland Police on 09 302 6400 and nominate a name for file number 150809/5127.

Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Rev’d Jo Kelly-Moore says the doors of the Cathedral are open for the entire community, for those with a need from prayer to seeking a quiet space. She says the recent theft is an abuse of those open doors and disappointing.

The Cathedral recently upgraded its security system and the staff are grateful for the assistance of the police. Dean Jo says locks and keys are part of life but it would be hoped that a church is a place that is respected and open.
