Burwood Resource Recovery Park fire update
Burwood Resource Recovery Park fire update
Burwood Resource Recovery Park Ltd, in conjunction with Rural Fire Canterbury and Christchurch City Council are currently managing a fire in the Burwood Resource Recovery Park (BRRP).
The fire started Thursday afternoon (6 August) in a pile of recycled timber recovered from the red zone.
The current situation at BRRP is as follows:
• The fire in the recycled timber stockpile is still burning
• Most of the timber has been burnt
• The strategy for managing the fire has been developed from multiple agencies and experts in timber fires and is under the control of the Christchurch City Council's Rural Fire Service
• The strategy is to allow this material to burn itself out and to ensure there is no potential for the fire to restart in the future
• While it is still burning, there may be some smoke and a red glow visible at night
• It may take another few days for the wood material to completely burn itself through
• The fire is contained inside earth bunds and patrolling is in place to ensure it stays in the confinement zone
• The southerly conditions have helped in taking smoke out to sea.
