Wet weather eases across the Region

Rainfall across the Horizons Region has eased as the wet weather system over the central North Island moves on.

Horizons Regional Council emergency manager Ian Lowe says Metservice has lifted their weather warning and operations and emergency management staff will keep an eye on river levels for the next few days.

“While there will be cold winds and showers over the weekend, we are not expecting this to impact any of our river systems,” says Mr Lowe.

“The Makino Stream peaked at 10am this morning around 1m in height so there was no need to operate the Makino flood gates. The Whanganui River is forecast to peak at a height of 6.4m at our Pipiriki monitoring site at 4pm tomorrow.

“This is lower than originally forecast and is not expected to cause any significant issues downstream or impact on newly reinstated flood protection. The Turakina River forecast to peak at around 5pm at a height of 4.1m and the Whangaehu around 6pm at a height of 4.1m.”

The latest river height and rainfall information is available via Horizons’ website or Waterline 0508 4 FLOOD (0508 435 663). More information on weather is available from www.metservice.com
