Tauranga mums urged to join this year’s Big Latch On
Tauranga mums are being urged to join this year’s Big Latch On breastfeeding event.
Waipu Hauora and Te Kupenga Hauora o Tauranga Moana have organised an event for local mums at Hungahungatoroa Marae, Matapihi, on Friday (July 31) at 10am.
They will be joining thousands of women from different cultures and backgrounds simultaneously breastfeeding their babies in public events, aiming to make this year the biggest demonstration yet.
Te Kupenga Hauora Manager Theresa Wharekura said the aim of the event is to get as many mama and pepi (babies) to join in.
“There are so many health benefits to breastfeeding. From when baby is born it acts as a first type of immunisation and then, as they get older, it’s simply the best food available.
Breast milk is a living thing and you can’t replicate that in a can,” she said.
“As women we’ve been given a wonderful gift to be able to breastfeed and Waipu Hauora encourages our mama (mothers) to feed for as long as they can for optimum health, nutrition and financial benefits but also to establish and grow the maternal bond between mother and child.
“The Big Latch On is a perfect opportunity to gather as a group in a safe, welcoming and stunning environment to celebrate its 11th anniversary together here at Hungahungatoroa Marae.
The purpose of the Big Latch On is to raise awareness and promote “breast is best” wherever and whenever. Breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and we should embrace it as the natural essence of great beginnings,” Theresa said.
The event will be held in the marae’s wharenui (meeting house) and is the seventh year Te Kupenga Hauora o Tauranga Moana has been involved.
