QLDC Accepts NZTA Advice on Kawarau Falls Bridge
Queenstown Lakes District Council accepts the
New Zealand Transport Agency’s professional advice on the
best location for the new bridge over the Kawarau River at
Frankton.
Mayor Vanessa van Uden said she, other Councillors and Council staff met with NZTA in Queenstown last week to review and discuss the modelling and analysis that the agency had carried out. “The decision on the location of the bridge is for NZTA to make. The Council is certainly an interested party and we have listened to the views of a group of concerned locals, and asked for further explanation from NZTA.”
“We received that explanation last week, and we are comfortable with the advice we have received that the best place for the new bridge is alongside the existing crossing. The location of a second new bridge is one part of a much broader picture for transportation in the Wakatipu that QLDC, NZTA and ORC are working on together.”
NZTA’s Regional Director Southern, Jim Harland, said last month that NZTA would be working with the Council to accelerate improvements at the intersection of SH6 and 6A (known locally as “the BP roundabout”), and to provide a long-term solution for Queenstown and the wider Wakatipu Basin.
