Waiouru Travellers to Use Portaloos While Public Toilets Rebuilt
Travellers through Waiouru will need to use portaloos for around 12 weeks from next Wednesday (1 July) as the public
toilets are rebuilt.
The redevelopment of the public toilets and associated street landscaping is the first part of a much larger vision for
Waiouru as being a key gateway to the volcanic plateau and the Ruapehu District.
Ruapehu District Council (RDC) Team Leader Community Property, Rebecca Van Orden, said that Council regrets any
inconvenience caused but the end result will be well worth it.
“Council will install portaloos for general public use over the closure period and have made arrangements with the Z
Service Station for disabled persons,” she said.
“The overall project forms part of Council’s larger economic development strategy for Ruapehu based around a broader
concept of Destination Management Planning.”
“The public toilet upgrade plan also includes the development of an amenity area which includes a rest area for
travellers with provision of space for a playground in the future.”
“By taking a ‘destination management’ approach to infrastructure investment Council is bringing together support for
local business with destination marketing and economic development activity.”
Mrs Van Orden said that Council has worked closely with the local community and the Waimarino-Waiouru Community Board on
the redevelopment plans.
“Together we see Waiouru as having a key role in the future of Ruapehu tourism as a starting point for the Volcanic Loop
and the Adventure Highway Heritage Trail.”
The toilet and amenity area redevelopment is a commitment to Waiouru’s potential as part of Ruapehu’s visitor and
tourism offering.”
