What road should I use getting across and through the central city?

Southbound (towards Port Hills)
If you are headed south, use Barbadoes St or Fitzgerald Ave or after Tuesday, Durham St.
Westbound (towards Hagley Park)
St Asaph St and Moorhouse Ave will have delays at peak hours. Avoid St Asaph Street and consider using Moorhouse Ave, Brougham Street or even Kilmore St for east/west journeys.
Northbound (towards Bealey Ave/ Papanui/ Shirley)
Madras Street will be busy at peaks. Use Fitzgerald Ave or Montreal St.
Central business district update
• St Asaph St - delays are continuing on St Asaph St at CPIT Polytech/ Madras intersection the week of 22 June but should be completed soon. Use Moorhouse Ave or Brougham St for east-west travel.
• Barbadoes St lateral pipes are being fixed from Tuesday, 23 June from St Asaph St to the Catholic Basilica/ Coventry St. Expect
delays through this area.
• Manchester St’s watermain project, second stage, starts 22 June, at the Armagh/ Manchester intersection. Manchester St will be one-way towards Gloucester
St from Armagh. Northbound drivers will be detoured onto Gloucester and Colombo Streets.
• Durham St will remain one lane from St Asaph to Moorhouse Ave probably until Tuesday, 23 June.
• Colombo St will be northbound only, towards the Square, between Moorhouse Ave and St Asaph St, for a day or two longer.
• Antigua St will be northbound only, towards the Square, between Moorhouse Ave and St Asaph St, from Tuesday, 23 June, once Durham St has opened up again.
• Moorhouse Ave continues to have lane drops including the overbridge and will have delays at peak times, however, things are improving
along Moorhouse as work sites reduce their size.
• Waller Tce, behind Hagley Community College, will be closed for three or four days to repair lateral connections
ARANUI/ WAINONI – a year of work in this area
Aranui, Wainoni – take care driving along Pages and Wainoni Roads
With Pages Road city-bound this year for the vacuum wastewater installations, the main detour route towards the beach/
Brighton is Kerrs Road and Wainoni Road.
• There are many businesses in this area which are open and wanting people to continue to get to them eg Café Jireh off
Bickerton St. Check their facebook page.
• There is good parking for the pharmacy and church off Breezes Road near the intersection. The Mobil station has access
off Pages and Breezes throughout this work.

• Eureka St - There will be a progressive road closure on Eureka St between Soberton and Cheriton Sts for the next six weeks while the
vacuum chambers and pipes are installed. The work will start on Cheriton St near the intersection with Eureka and the
first stage will take about three days.
• Basingstoke St - continuing road closure east of Bournemouth Crescent, heading towards Hampshire St for another month.
• Basingstoke St – Two way traffic will be maintained using a priority give-way system east of Portsmouth St from 22 June until late
August for the vacuum installations along this stretch of the street to Bournemouth Crescent.
ONGOING WORK OTHER SUBURBS
Linwood – Aldwins/ Ensors/ Ferry intersection, night works 22 – 24 June
There will be night works at this corner 7 pm to 6 am from Monday night. Southbound drivers won’t be able to turn right
onto Ferry Road while this is happening.
Selwyn St, Addington, between Brougham St and Somerset Crescent
Two-way traffic but work will start as early as Wednesday, 25 June. There will be no right hand turn from Somerset
Crescent onto Brougham Street. Please be careful of cyclists who will be merged with traffic in this area.
Edgeware Road, St Albans, one-way from next week
Edgeware Road will be reduced to one-way traffic for eastbound drivers, between Manchester Street and Allard Street. A
detour will be in place for westbound drivers. Mel and Zoe’s Alteration and Design will still be accessible for
westbound traffic by a detour along Barbadoes Street, Edward Avenue and Madras Street.
UPCOMING – from Monday, 29 June, Opawa Road one-way for three days
SCIRT’s McConnell Dowell team will be returning to Opawa Road to repair the wastewater laterals outside 69 and 79 Opawa
Road. Opawa Road will be one-way travelling west from Ensors Road to Brougham St. This one-way system will be in place
from Monday 29 June for about three days.
