Months Plus of Increasing Guest Nights
Whanganui has just recorded 13 months of consecutive increases in commercial guest nights for the year ending April 2015.
Total guest nights increased by 11.1% for the year ending April 2015. The average length of stay in Whanganui increased to 1.75 nights and occupancy figures continue to increase as well for the same period. The majority of these visitors are other New Zealanders making up 80% of all visitors to Whanganui for the year ending April 2015.
Lyn Cheyne, Whanganui’s Promotion and Marketing Manager, said “Anecdotal evidence also supports a bigger and better season for the majority of our tourism operators. April and May has extended beyond previous years and there’s energy in the sector. We’ve build on the Visitor Strategy developed with Visit Whanganui (the district’s Regional Tourism Organisation) and seen some good results from targeted advertising in the lower North Island.”
For over a year now the trend has shown increasing number of visitors to Whanganui both by the Commercial Accommodation Monitor and the local i-SITE figures. In December 2014 the percentage increase for Whanganui in commercial guest nights was the highest in the North Island (32%) and the highest numbers of visitors and revenue were recorded for January at the i-SITE since 2010. The same “top of the table” results for the North Island also occurred in February this year.
