Local historians Bruce and Trixie Harvey will speak about The Orpheus disaster. New Zealand's worst maritime disaster with attendant loss of life (189) occurred 30 kilometres from Titirangi on the West Coast at Whatipu on the Manukau Heads in 1863.
Hear about the demise of HMS Orpheus, the impending Land Wars and the drama and aftermath of this event. Who was Captain Wing and why did he live on the wild coast at Whatipu? Who was Commodore Burnett and how did Maori at the time react?
