Wasted food recipes could win
Bread, potatoes, apples, chicken and lettuce are all among food items that feature in the top ten foods New Zealanders throw away.
They’re also the ingredients that Gisborne District Council wants your best recipe for at this weekend’s Home & Lifestyle Expo.
“We’re offering 2 Free Workshops at Gizzy Food Month in July for the best recipes entered in the competition at our expo stand,” says waste minimisation officer Anne Lister.
“The best recipes will be selected, cooked and judged by Gizzy Food Month organiser and owner of BlackFig Catering, Amy Spence.”
“The top dishes will be photographed and recipes will appear in the weekender, on our website and Facebook page.”
Mayor Meng Foon says he always has recipes he can use leftovers in. “We don’t peel anything either, eating our kumara, potatoes and pumpkin with skins on.”
“In our whanau leftovers is called ‘lunch the next day’,” says Councillor Meredith Akuhata-Brown, “the foods listed as leftovers would make a delicious salad!”
Council is a supporter of the Love Food Hate Waste campaign that earlier this month reported New Zealand wastes more than $870 million worth of food products each year.
“That’s an average of 79kilos per family every year, we’re going to have some of that food on display on our stand just to show you how much waste it actually is, says Ms Lister.
“Imagine three shopping trolleys full of food.
“We’re running this competition at the expo to highlight the issue and find the most creative ways of using food items that are commonly found in many households.
“Plus we’ll have more information, quizzes and freebies on offer to help you reduce waste in your household.”
Visit stand number 9 at the expo to find out more on what goes in your recycling bin.
Sign up to free composting workshops for a free compost bin. Talk about reducing plastic bags in our district and grab a free re-usable bag.
The top 10 foods eligible for the recipe competition include bread, leftovers, potatoes, apples, chicken, bananas, lettuce, oranges, pumpkins and carrots.
“Bring your recipe along or make it up on the day and be in to win.”
