NZ's first off-the-grid art gallery
Forming part of the Miranda Farm complex of organic orchards, a farm shop and café, the Miranda Farm Gallery is the
first off-the-grid art gallery in New Zealand. The new rural art gallery has opened in Miranda on the Firth of Thames,
one hour South of Auckland.
The large sculptural works of Michael Smither, Fatu Feu'u, Steve Woodward, Neil Miller, Ben Beemsterboer and Phil Neary
are dotted amongst the trees and gardens at Miranda Orchards overlooking the Hauraki Gulf.
Additionally there are many smaller works in metal, wood and ceramics exhibited ,and these include those of Warren
Viscoe, Clovis Viscoe, Peter Lange, Barry Brickell, Wailin Elliott, Lynda Harris and Nick Dryden. The small gallery is a
hand-built straw bale building, and the farm itself exhibits a truly sustainable form of land use. Even the public
lavatory is a sculpture.
The opening exhibition currently showing is a retrospective of Ralph Hotere, with works selected from three private
collections. These are paintings that have never been out in public before, except for one large work which represented
New Zealand at the 1969 Venice Biennale, which is the only work in the show that is for sale.
Opening hours are Wednesday through Sunday 10am to 3pm. There is a small admission fee for the Hotere retrospective.
