Commuters urged to stay in town
North-bound commuters are being advised to stay where they are as warnings of increased flooding are issued and multiple transport failures are occurring across the region.
Several bands of rain are forecast to sweep across the region between now and 7.00 pm tonight causing further issues for
people trying to get home on already gridlocked roads.
High tides in Porirua and on the Kapiti Coast are due at 7.00 pm tonight when the flooding is expected to peak.
Rail networks are all currently not running due to flooding and the Police are stationed at the rail station to advise
commuters to stay in the city until further notice. Some Buses have been provided.
The Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office (WREMO) has activated its Regional Transport Response Team which
will prepare a transport plan for release within the next hour.
Situation:
• Rail network closed for the rest of the day. Some bus replacements.
• SH 2 between Petone and Melling is closed.
• Surface flooding and major congestion on some local roads.
• Heavy congestion on major roads
• SH1 is open between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay but it is heavily congested.
• Buses are collecting children from schools but may be delay due to increasing congestion.
