100 submissions in support of cycling - Generation Zero
In less than 24 hours over 100 people have submitted on Hamilton City Council’s 10 Year Plan using youth climate action group Generation Zero’s quick submit form available at generationzero.org/ham10yearplan.
“This shows people having their say on issues which matter to them, especially the total lack of funding for cycling in the council’s draft ten year budget,” said Generation Zero Spokesperson, Aaron Wong.
Within the $216 million budgeted for transport in the draft plan, there is no specified budget for cycling improvements.
“We’ve made the submissions process more accessible and people are submitting on a wide range of issues as well as cycle funding.”
Hamilton has two lengthy off road cycle routes, one along the river and the other following the Hamilton Ring Road. This is supplemented by painted cycle lanes on some roads and cycle advance boxes at some intersections.
The Te Awa The Great New Zealand River Ride trust has recently announced that $200,000 in funding is required over two years to complete the section to Hamilton Gardens.
“In Hamilton there is such a great opportunity for cycling to become a key attraction as well as safe and accessible for getting to work or school. Council need to get behind this vision.”
Submissions close at 4pm on May 15th. The quick submit form is available at generationzero.org/ham10yearplan.
