Artivism goes viral on Whangarei streets

Whangarei is transforming itself into a 'city of colour' in the last week of lead-up to a binding public referendum.

The latest and largest creation - an 8.4m long 3D mural - holds a commanding position close to the building that supporters want to see renovated into the controversial Hundertwasser Wairau Maori Art Centre.

"The 'colour our city' movement was inspired by the painted bollards that became national news last year" says local letterbox painter Eileen McNaughton.

"I wanted a positive way to show my support for the exciting opportunity Whangarei is being offered. The quality of my effort is pretty low compared to some of the amazing creations I've been seeing, but I'm proud to have contributed."

Enthused locals are holding a Colour Our City Celebration this weekend in Whangarei. The postal ballot referendum starts on 14th May 2015.
