Wellington Rape Crisis launches its Annual Appeal
Wellington Rape Crisis will hold its annual appeal this week, with street collectors throughout Wellington on Thursday 7 May and Saturday 9 May.
Donations can also be made through the agency’s website and will go towards the
operating costs of the agency which aren’t covered by government funding.
“Wellington Rape Crisis does hugely important work, but still relies on donations from the public to keep our services running,” says Eleanor Butterworth, Wellington Rape Crisis agency manager.
“We receive government funding and other grants for specific costs and projects, but last year about a quarter of the day-to-day running of the agency was paid for with public donations.
“Our annual appeal keeps us going and also reminds survivors and their loved ones that there are places they can go for help.
“New Zealand has horrific rates of sexual violence and abuse. Our attitudes towards sex, consent and respect are slowly getting better, but there are still huge numbers of people who need our support, from clients with long-term counselling needs to survivors in crisis who need immediate help.”
Annual appeal coordinator Tabitha Besley says there are many ways people can support Wellington Rape Crisis.
“You can donate cash to our street collectors on Thursday and Saturday, run your own fundraiser by making a collection at your workplace or selling items on Trademe, or making a payment through the Wellington Rape Crisis website.
“Every dollar donated can make a huge difference to someone’s life.”
