Dunedin Songwriters Add Their Voices to City of Literature
Dunedin (Friday, 1 May) – Dunedin Public Libraries, DunedinMusic.com and Strawberry Sound are joining forces once again
this May to bring New Zealand Music Month to the city.
This annual celebration of New Zealand musical talent has been running for over 10 years at Dunedin Public Libraries and
continues to go from strength to strength. This year no fewer than 54 groups, bands and singers will be performing over
30 free gigs during the course of the month.
There will be something to suit all musical tastes with gig nights every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, at the City
Library, running the gamut from punk to classical, while Saturdays will showcase mellow lunchtime sets ranging from
rockabilly to a capella chorus. The full programme also includes performances at every community library in the city,
including classical guitar, acoustic groups, kappa haka and high school bands.
In our first year as a UNESCO City of Literature, Music Month will be an exciting opportunity to see Dunedin’s
songwriters showcasing their contribution to the literary scene.
The City Library will host the opening launch party for the New Zealand Music Month on Friday night with Tahu and the
Takahes headlining and supported by local teen band Metal Fusion, as well as musicians from Otago Girls High School and
Kaikorai Valley College. The party kicks off at 5.30pm in the Teen Space. Over at Mosgiel Library, Music Month starts on
the Taieri with a performance by Beverley Kay-Donner at 2pm.
