Friday Night Food Trucks trial ends
They came, they prospered and now they’re finishing for the season – the trial of the Friday Night Food Trucks in Cathedral Square is coming to an end with the last night of trading being Good Friday 3 April 2015.
Food trucks from around Christchurch came together to serve an array of global street food from Cathedral Square on Friday nights. The trial got underway on Friday 31 October starting with eight food trucks. The number of regular trucks has increased to 16 with a number of other vendors on a waiting list for a spot.
“Christchurch City Council is conducting a survey of customers and vendors to find out if the idea is sustainable and to gauge support for FridayNight Food Trucks to return to the city over the summer months,” says Carolyn Ingles, Urban Design and Regeneration Unit Manager.
“The objective of the Friday Night Food Trucks is to create a vibrant and safe space for people to enjoy and to encourage Christchurch residents and visitors back into the Central City.”
Ms Ingles says she has been excited to see people returning to the Square, especially the families with children.
“Many people have said it’s their first time back since the February 2011 earthquakes, and they’re loving it – there’s a carnival-like atmosphere.”
On the final night of the Friday Night Food Trucks (3 April) there will added entertainment to celebrate their success.
The food trucks attract more than 1,000 foodies every Friday, with 6.30pm – 8.30pm the busiest time. Several trucks regularly run out of some of the more popular menu items.
The Council is inviting anyone who has experienced the Friday Night Food Trucks to provide feedback by completing the survey.
