Playground main works soon to start

Work on the Margaret Mahy Family Playground is about to step up a notch as the next stage of construction goes out to tender today.

Christchurch Central Development Unit Director Warwick Isaacs says the tender for these main works will be sent to the shortlisted panel of contractors assembled for delivery of Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct.

“Works are already underway on the site between Manchester, Madras and Armagh streets installing drainage, relocating cables and earthworks,” he says.

“The next stage is due to start in April and will include paving, lighting, cabling, decking, seating and extensive landscaping, along with the installation of an amazing array of play equipment.

“The playground will include a mix of uniquely designed equipment, such as a 10 metre high climbing tower, double flying fox and a 4 metre wide slide.

“The remainder of the site will be developed with lawns, landscaping, car parking and picnic areas,” Mr Isaacs says.

The tender process for construction of parkland through the East Frame Residential Precinct will start next month, to create the third largest open space in central Christchurch, and support the development of the new inner city community.
