Striking ballerina shot wins photography competition

A striking photo of a much-loved city mural has won a competition to find the cover shot for the Christchurch City Council's Long Term Plan consultation document.

Shirley resident Ann Coates' winning photo taken in New Regent Street features Owen Dippie's ballerina mural on the Isaac Theatre Royal, a temporary pocket park, and part of an old brick building.

The Eye of Christchurch photography competition asked photographers to take a picture capturing the mood of a city in transition and Ann says hers does that. " It's little bit of the old, with a little bit of the new, and a nice place to sit and relax."

Ann is an enthusiastic amateur photographer who normally focuses on animals and birds, but she enjoyed the challenge of trying something different and made a special effort to get the perfect picture for the competition.

"I knew I was running out of time to enter so I took some time off work to go for a walk around town. When I looked at the pictures I had taken, this one stood out because it was so vibrant."

Mayor Lianne Dalziel says the ballerina image was easily her favourite. "It perfectly captures the past, present and future all in one go."

The winning image and other highly commended photographs from the 150 entries will also go on show at the Council's civic offices on 17 March, the day formal consultation begins on the Long Term Plan 2015-25.

A draft of the consultation document goes online late this afternoon and will be discussed attomorrow's Council meeting. Once adopted by the Council, the final consultation document and submission forms will be available online, at Council libraries and service centres or by phoning 03 941 8999 or 0800 800 169.
