South Auckland’s newest Kura Hourua-Partnership School officially opens this Wednesday 04 March in Māngere.
Te Kura Māori o Waatea, is a Manukau Urban Māori Authority initiative that aims to inspire aspiration and achievement
with integrity and against all odds.
Manukau Urban Māori Authority CEO, Willie Jackson says the Kura is currently enrolling tamariki aged 5 years to 8 years
and is a quantum step in raising educational achievement for Māori.
“Te Kura Māori o Waatea meets the needs of some South Auckland whanau eager to see their tamariki thrive and prosper in
a supportive holistic environment.” Says Mr Jackson.
“We’re about offering our whanau many of whom haven’t experienced positive educational outcomes - Māori pedagogy, proven
teaching methods with successful outcomes.”
“Kura Hourua, partnership schools are about offering choices and chances of success, we’re not about competing against
mainstream schools.” Adds Mr Jackson.
The Tumuaki of Te Kura Māori o Waatea is respected academic and author Ms Tania Rangiheuea. She is supported by well
qualified Kaiako.
The Kura is based at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae Favona Mangere, providing a culturally enriched environment says Ms
Rangiheuea.
“Learning and teaching is a developmental philosophy validating the uniqueness of each tamaiti.” Adds Ms Rangiheuea.
Ngā Kura Māori o Waatea will be opened by the Minister of Education Hon Hekia Parata. Also expected to attend the
opening is David Seymour ACT MP and Parliament Under Secretary of Education. Former Māori Party Co-Leader and Minister
for Whanau Ora Hon Tariana Turia will also be present.
