Warning signs up at Takapuna beach over water quality issue

Auckland Council has placed warning signs at Takapuna beach week advising swimmers and other beach users of poor water quality.

Indicators of poor water quality were found by the council’s Safeswim monitoring programme which tests water quality across 63 of Auckland’s beaches.

The testing is in accordance with national guidelines and tested the levels of specific bacteria indicators that suggest a potential risk to human health.

The test results from neighbouring beaches –Milford, Mairangi Bay and Long Bay- have been inconclusive and further testing is being carried out there to confirm if there is a significant risk.

Auckland Council is investigating to confirm the source of contamination.

The water will be tested again yesterday at the daytime high tide. The council will be in a position to advise on any further action later this afternoon when the results are in.

Earlier this week similar signs went up at Clarks Beach and at Laingholm Beach but tests since have shown good results.
