Big
traffic change Governors Bay, Dyers Pass Road down to one
lane, March – August

Governors Bay and Banks Peninsula residents and people who use Dyers Pass Road to get over the hill each day should expect delays for several months from March. This area is popular with weekend cyclists so both cyclists and drivers need to take care.
SCIRT’s Fletcher team starts work on retaining walls on the Governors Bay side of Dyers Pass Road late February/ early March, narrowing the road to one lane.
In order to maintain two-way traffic, traffic lights will be needed to ensure safe journeys up and down the one-lane stretch. See the work notice and overview for all the details. http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/6401
• The work will take up to six months.
•
Traffic lights will control the flow of traffic.
•
The work starts at the intersection of Dyers Pass and
Governors Bay Roads extending uphill for 400 metres.
•
Two walls will be repaired, with rock anchors, and the
central section fully rebuilt.
• More than 100
rock anchors will be installed.
Preliminary
work end of February
Preparatory work will be
underway from this week, last week of February, until early
March 2015.http://strongerchristchurch.govt.nz/work/activity/6388
This
will include removing vegetation on the Christchurch City
Council road reserve and private property. Property owners
will be notified beforehand. This vegetation will be cleared
from the work area to ensure enough space to repair the
retaining walls on the downside of the hill.
The Fletcher
crew will also be establishing the site office and laydown
areas (where plant and machinery will be stored) and setting
out traffic management. Fencing will be erected around the
site, enclosing the work area.
Cyclists and
pedestrians
Temporary traffic management using
stop/go signs will be in place while this preliminary
tree-trimming work is underway.
•
Cyclists will need to merge with traffic flow, so please
take care and if driving, allow the cyclist to hold the lane
until the road opens out and drivers can safely pass.
•
Please follow the signs and reduce speed.
•
Parking on the street will not be available next to the work
area.
• A pedestrian diversion will be provided
around the work area. Please follow our
signs.
Residents’ access
Residents
living on this bottom section of Dyers Pass Road, between
number 1091 and 1063, will be most affected by this work
over several months. The turning room for cars where the
road is reduced to one lane is limited and the angle of the
driveways means residents and visitors to these properties
will have to exit uphill. There will be a sensor on each
driveway which will register when a car is waiting to exit
and each property will have their own traffic light system
for a safe turn up the hill. There is no visibility from
many of these properties to the two sets of traffic lights.
The on-site traffic controller will be working to ensure
residents can safely turn into their driveways.
SCIRT thanks everyone for taking care and building in extra time while this work is underway, watching for cyclists and pedestrians.
