Maori Responsiveness Manager Welcomed in Powhiri

The community of Counties Manukau today welcomed Inspector Nga-Wati Chaplow as Counties Manukau Police Maori Responsiveness Manager in a powhiri at Te Puea Marae, Mangere Bridge.

The newly created role is one of 12 throughout the country (one per Police District) and Inspector Chaplow will have responsibility for the Counties Manukau Police Maori, Pacific and Ethnic Services Group (MPES).

“Counties Manukau is a very diverse District and this appointment is a demonstration of our commitment to working with iwi in our community,” says Counties Manukau Police District Commander Superintendent John Tims. “By building strong relationships with iwi and community partners we are continuing to work towards reducing Maori offending and victimisation and creating a safer community for all in Counties Manukau.”

Inspector Chaplow previously held the position of Detective Sergeant and made the move into his current role following his participation in the Te Reo total immersion programme in 2013.

“Our core business will not succeed unless we have the backing of our community,” says Inspector Chaplow. “The outcomes that are achieved by our group are not only indicative of what we do but also of the partnerships we have with our community. My personal commitment in the role of Maori Responsiveness Manager, and the commitment of the MPES group in Counties Manukau, is to work together to generate positive outcomes for all groups across the community.

“Ma te mahitahi te huahua e puawai (by working together the outcomes will be achieved).”

Uncle Api, Dr Apirana Mahuika, was also acknowledged in the powhiri by Superintendent Tims for his contribution in guiding and strengthening NZ Police’s relationship with iwi. Uncle Api passed away earlier this month.
