Hutt City Council invests in local science centre
Hutt
City Council has committed time and money to developing a
science resource centre to support local educators in
teaching science and stimulating a life-long passion in
students.
Specialist educator Anne Ryan has been appointed to the role of director and will oversee the direction of the centre. The former secondary science teacher and Head of Science also has experience teaching in primary schools and in bilingual education. More recently she has taught in the tertiary sector while studying for a PhD.
The centre will initially be a way of accessing resources and professional development rather than a physical location.
Anne Ryan says, “Hutt City boasts a growing number of science and technology businesses and is home to significant science-based organisations that grow our local and national economy.
“To continue building our reputation as a centre for science and technology excellence we need to engage our young people and grow their interest through their school years, so they will study further and work for one of our world-leading science companies or even establish their own.”
A network of volunteers will support the centre; initially refilling and delivering science resource kits to make sure schools are well serviced.
Other planned
activities include professional development sessions for
teachers, and science-based after school and holiday
programmes for
students.
