New Advances in Biosecurity for Zealandia

Wellington, NZ – Today ZEALANDIA Ecosanctuary celebrated another milestone in biosecurity with the official opening of its brand new electronic entrance gate. This is a critical addition to the urban sanctuary and will help to prevent possums, rats, and other pest mammals from impacting native plants and wildlife.

The new gate was funded through Transpower’s CommunityCare Fund and installed by Waterford Security in late January. It features two sealed doors at both the entrance and exit that will not open at the same time, ensuring that the sanctuary is always completely enclosed even as visitors are entering and exiting.

Among the attendees of today’s event were Geoff Wishart, Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Transpower; David Knight, Transpower General Counsel; Phillip Meyer, Deputy Chair, Karori Sanctuary Trust Board of Trustees; Hilary Beaton, a core group of Veteran Volunteers that have been involved with the sanctuary for many years.

The gate opening was run as a part of a series of events celebrating Zealandia’s 20 Year Anniversary in 2015.
