Nominations open in by-election for new City Councillor
Nominations open today in the by-election for position of City Councillor.
The extraordinary vacancy has arisen due to the successful election of Grant Smith to Mayor.
“The Council is required by legislation to conduct an election to fill the vacancy,” Electoral Officer Dr John Annabell said. “The Council is not permitted to appoint a person without election or to decide not to fill the position. These options apply only if the next local government election date (8 October 2016) is 12 months or less away.”
To be eligible for nomination a candidate must be on the parliamentary electoral roll and a citizen of New Zealand.
All nominations must be made on the official nomination paper available from the Electoral Officer.
Closing date for nominations is 12 noon on Friday 20 March 2015.
