Rotorua mayor to welcome Waiariki’s international students

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick is to welcome more than a hundred of Waiariki Institute of Technology’s (WIT) new international students at Rotorua Lakes Council’s Civic Centre this week.

The event will take place in the Council Chamber on Thursday (19 February) from2pm to 3.30pm and will include a welcome and presentation by Mayor Chadwick, followed by afternoon tea and a photo opportunity for the students.

Mayor Chadwick said she was looking forward to welcoming the international students as they embark on their new journey of learning and discovery.

“I’m really pleased these young people have chosen Rotorua to not only study, but to develop their English language skills by immersing themselves in our Kiwi culture.

"Rotorua provides a safe and friendly environment for international students to further their education and they make a significant contribution to our local economy.

“Additionally we appreciate their involvement in our community and the stories they have to share with us from their home countries. Our community is substantially enriched by their presence among us.”

Countries most represented in this year’s diverse intake of international students at Waiariki are India, China, Chile and the Philippines.
