One person seriously injured following near miss in the Hauraki Gulf
At 1440 hours hours this afternoon Coastguard's Operations Centre was alerted by a member of the public to an urgent
medical situation following a near miss south of Motuhie Island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf
One person had been pulled from the water unconscious but breathing having jumped from his vessel he was on to avoid the
collision. It is believed that once in the water he was then struck by the oncoming vessel a 50 foot yacht who then
retrieved him from the water before being transfer to Lion Foundation Rescue who arrived on-scene shortly after.
Police launch Deodar III transported a paramedic from Auckland to the scene where Coastguard Rescue Vessel Lion
Foundation Rescue then transported the patient to an awaiting ambulance at Mechanics Bay under the care of the
Paramedic.
All 3 other people involved in the incident were unharmed. Coastguard Operations Manager Ray Burge says "It's a reminder
to all boaties to maintain a good look out at all times and ensure your intentions are indicated early on". Traffic on
the water has been heavy due to the long weekend.
