Record for Coastguard over Anniversary Weekend
Record for Coastguard over Anniversary Weekend and last chance for Aucklanders with Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade!
Anniversary Weekend saw Coastguard Northern Region Operations Centre take 4,574 calls from boaties heading out, including 76 calls for help over the three days that were packed with sunshine and light winds!
Sunday provided the second busiest day on record with 179 trip reports in one hour, at peak a call every 20 seconds. Coastguard Volunteers took to the water to ensure boaties enjoyed the busy weekend as safely as possible. “It was a busy weekend for sure, but great to see people wearing their lifejackets and making a call to Coastguard Radio to tell us where they’re heading and what their plans area” says Ray Burge, Operations Manager.
Coastguard’s Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade has attracted thousands of lifejacket trade-ins of all shapes, size and ages from communities throughout the Region. Over the last three months the Old4New Upgrade Van laded with lifejackets has been a popular sight from the Far North, to Coromandel across to Raglan and greater Auckland during the summer season. “This weekend is the last chance to take advantage of the upgrade campaign” says Georgie Smith, Marketing & Funding Manager. Anyone who owns a lifejacket is encouraged to make the most of the opportunity to upgrade their current one for a fit for purpose lifejacket with a competitive trade in discount through the ‘Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade’. The van laden with brand new lifejackets will be at Gulf Harbour Marina from 7.30am – 10.00am and again from 3.00pm – 5.00pm on Saturday 24th January with the last day on Sunday 1st of February from 7.30am – 1.30pm at Coastguard’s Regional Quarters in Mechanics Bay. The campaign has seen over 2,500 jackets traded in over summer!
