Police appeal for cyclists on SH73 yesterday to come forward

Canterbury Police are appealing for the person driving a tractor and the two cyclists who were seen travelling along SH73 towards Christchurch, West Coast Road, in the vicinity of the start of the fire near Flock Hill on Monday (26 January 2015) to come forward. The fire started at approximately 2.30pm.

Detective Inspector Greg Murton says “This fire appears to have started in four separate locations along the east-bound bank next to SH73 yesterday. A member of the public has provided Police with dash-cam footage which shows two cyclists close to where the fire is believed to have started. We are keen to talk to them as they are key witnesses and may be able to provide us with information that can help with our inquiry. We understand that a tractor had also recently driven past the area and are keen to talk to the driver also.”

“There is considerable fire damage to surrounding paddocks and bush. SH73 was closed for some time while the Fire Service fought the blaze and is has now reopened “ explained Detective Inspector Murton.

If you were one of the cyclists or the driver of the tractor or have any information about the cause of the fire Canterbury Police urge you to contact them on 03 363 7670.

Information can also be provided anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Media please note – there will be a limited opportunity for telephone interviews to verbalise the release this afternoon. Please text the District Communications Manager on 021 942 404 if you would like a time allocated for you.
